THE POWER OF GOD’S WORD

“The kingdom of God is like this,” He said. “A man scatters seed on the ground; 27 he sleeps and rises—night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows—he doesn’t know how (Mark 4:26-27).

The last phrase in verse 27 says that the farmer does not know how the seed germinates. He just knows that it happens. This process is really still a mystery.

That’s the point. We don’t know how God’s Spirit moves, convincing men and women of sin and drawing them to Himself. But we know that the seed is the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes.

Six years ago, Israeli doctors and scientists successfully germinated a date seed nearly 2,000 years old. They nicknamed the seed, Methuselah. Excavated from Masada, the cliff fortress where, in A.D. 73, 960 Jewish zealots died by their own hand, rather than surrender to a Roman assault. DNA testing showed that the seed to be 1,990 years old (plus or minus 50 years). The seeds were actually excavated in the 1970s and stored in a drawer until Dr. Sarah Sallon persuaded the director of the research to part with three of the seeds.

She planted the date seeds after trying to draw them out of their deep dormancy. She first soaked the seeds in hot water to soften the coat, then in an acid rich in hormones, then in an enzymatic fertilizer made of seaweed and other nutrients. About six weeks later, one of the seeds came up. The first two leaves looked odd, she said, very flat and pale. “But the third looked like a date leaf with lines, and every one since has looked more and more normal – like it had a hard time getting out of the seed.”

Jesus’ parable tells something about the unique power of God’s Word. It’s so paradoxical. A seed goes into the ground and dies and as it dies, out of it comes life. How does that happen? Nobody knows that. The farmer does not know that. The farmer cannot make that happen. Nobody can make that happen. The best horticulturists in the world do not know how that happens. They know it happens but they can’t define how it happens or why it happens. Out of this dying seed comes life.

That’s the miracle of the gospel hidden in those simple gospel truths is the power of life and it breaks out while we sleep. All we can do is to tell the truth, to speak the truth. We cannot take care of the results. We cannot give life. God gives the increase.

No human being contributes to the regeneration, conversion, justification, salvation process. All we can do is tell the truth. The seed is potent, the gospel is the power of God unto salvation.

This is a critical lesson. No one can make another person believe. No human being no matter how persuasive, no matter how clever, makes a contribution to regeneration, conversion or justification. All we can do is give the truth. We cannot change hearts, and we cannot produce life from dead people. That’s something the Lord alone does.
